[LISTEN] What is the holistic approach to mental wellness?

Wellness goes beyond just the psychological well, says Ashleigh-Jayne Tennier.

When we think of wellness, we often consider it to be a linear conversation. In my mind, I always figured it was about managing the mental clutter in our minds through various activities like meditation and exercise - but it goes beyond that.

"I remember, standing in the middle of the gym, after six months on anti-depressants, I looked around and remembering thinking, “Wow, I don’t feel a thing.”

Now, anti-depressants work and they have made remarkable strides in helping people cope with the severe - and still widely misunderstood - field of mental health.💊

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a widely used type of antidepressant. They're mainly prescribed to treat depression, particularly persistent or severe cases, and are often used in combination with a talking therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).🗣

SSRIs changed my life.

But, the path to mental wellness goes far beyond the use of SSRIs. Clinical psychologists and psychiatrists will always prescribe a healthy dose of balanced diets, exercise, and stress management techniques.⚙️

Since the start of COVID-19, more South Africans have reported the severe impact the pandemic has had o their mental health. In my opinion, the pandemic helped a lot of people realise that they’ve been living with undiagnosed mental health issues long before COVID-19.😷

In September 2021, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group reported that South Africa is facing a suicide crisis.⚠️

SADAG reports that there are 23 known cases of suicide in South Africa every day, and for every person that commits suicide, 10 have attempted it.😱

Before Covid-19, the organisation fielded 600 calls a day.☎️

As of September 2021, that number had risen to 2 200 calls a day — an increase of nearly 40%.📈

So, how do you follow a holistic regime without it becoming an exhausting process?🧘🏼

In this important episode, we discuss how to find that path to wellness.🎙

Ashleigh has an incredible passion for healing. Over the years she has learned that there is not one aspect of health that is more important than the other and to achieve complete wellness, the entire being of body, mind, and soul should be considered.⭕️

After a health scare, she was placed on chronic medication and experienced severe weight gain. she was very unhappy within herself, with her body, her health, and her environment, and found comfort in food. From the weight gain and medication, she experienced terrible side effects to her health, self-worth, and confidence and decided to make some important changes to her lifestyle.🏃🏼‍♀️

She began ‘dieting’ to drop weight quickly, experimented with a variety of weight loss supplements, and decided to see a dietitian and further educate herself better on everyday healthy nutrition so she went on to study her BSc. Med. Hons in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Cape Town (UCT).🏛

During her own self-discovery journey & healing process, she became an International Lightarian Reiki Master and Life Alignment, practitioner. With these healing modalities and other techniques she has learned over the years, she’s seen the importance that emotional and vibrational alignment plays on our health.⚕️

Her goal is to assist anyone looking to improve their life by improving their vibrational frequency and supporting a journey to a healthy relationship with themselves and their bodies as well as finding a healthier, more peaceful relationship with food.🥗
